The Roadmap
The path to Blatten was laid out by the municipality, the canton, and the federal government in a joint roadmap. It serves as the foundation for the reconstruction and outlines how the vision of a new village will become a reality, step by step.
On the very day of the landslide, Mayor Matthias Bellwald said, “We have lost our village, but not our hearts.” With these words, he called on the residents to believe in Blatten’s future. This belief led the municipality to develop a concrete implementation plan: the roadmap for reconstruction, which was supported and approved by the canton and the federal government.
Among other things, it defines:
- the necessary legal resolutions,
- the legal requirements and guidelines,
- the organization of committees and procedures,
- the areas of authority and responsibilities,
- as well as the specific measures and their timeline for implementation.
The 69 measures in the roadmap are supplemented by additional tasks that fall exclusively within the municipality’s jurisdiction. With its deliberation and subsequent approval of the decree in December 2025, the Grand Council of the Canton of Valais laid the legal groundwork for this process.
Among the most important milestones in the roadmap for the village’s reconstruction are:
2025:
- Access to the remaining settlement areas via the emergency road and restoration of infrastructure; clearing work on the northern slope.
- Drafting and adoption of the decree of December 18, 2025, for the reconstruction of “BLATTEN 2030.”
2026
- Start of construction on the new cantonal road
- Completion of the emergency road
- Demolition of buildings affected by the lake
- Call for bids for the master plan study
- Construction of the temporary aerial tramway
2027
- Continuation of construction of the cantonal road
- Construction of infrastructure extending into the village area
- Completion of the master plan
- Start of the reclamation of agricultural land
- ZNP
2028
- Completion of the cantonal highway
- Construction of infrastructure in the village and on the outskirts
- Start of civil engineering work for public and private buildings
2029
- Completion of the first buildings
- First residents return to the new Blatten
....
However, the reconstruction is not limited to construction measures. At the same time, numerous legal frameworks must be established, particularly regarding land issues and property ownership. Meanwhile, the municipal council must ensure that the municipality’s day-to-day operations continue. This challenge is further complicated by the fact that residents are currently scattered across more than a dozen different municipalities.
