Update on the Oigschtchummun Glacier

The municipality of Blatten announces: The cantonal road between Blatten and Fafleralp will be opened to motor vehicles with restrictions on Friday, June 26, 2026. Monitoring of the Oigschtchummun Glacier will be stepped up, and two traffic light systems will be installed. A restricted zone will be established south of the Lonza between Chiematt and Fafleralp. The hiking trail between Eisten (Geriin) and Fafleralp will remain closed.

The cantonal road will be opened to motor vehicles with a minimum speed of 30 km/h on Friday, June 26, 2026, starting at 8:00 a.m. The current permit requirements for using the emergency road remain in effect: a driving permit from the municipality of Blatten is required. Slower vehicles (vehicle category G), bicycles, and pedestrians are not permitted to use this section of the road because the reaction time is too short. The no-stopping zones on the cantonal road between Chiematt (Bleikä) and Fafleralp (parking lot) must be strictly observed.

Monitoring of the Oigschtchummun Glacier is ensured by various measurement and observation systems. Among other things, a Doppler radar is linked to a traffic light system so that road users can be warned in case of danger and the road can be automatically closed.

A restricted zone will be established south of the Lonza between Chiematt (Bleikä) and east of the large Lowinbach. The municipality of Blatten will issue an official order to this effect. Consequently, agricultural use of the Vorsaas and Chiemattmattä is not permitted until further notice.

The hiking trails between Eisten (Geriin), Chiematt, and Fafleralp remain closed.

The situation is being assessed several times a week. If conditions improve, the protective measures will be relaxed. Should glacier movement increase, the measures will have to be tightened.
