Wiler (Lötschen)

Organizer:

Location / Map

On Sunday, 17 June 1900, the village of Wiler was ravaged by a terrible village fire in which all the houses were burnt down. During the procession in Kippel, worshippers noticed that black smoke was rising in Wiler. After just 4 ½ hours, the last of the 400 fires in the village of Wiler fell. The beautiful village was reduced to a smoking pile of rubble! The poor people stood around the site of the fire, mourning and weeping with their salvaged belongings. The total damage was estimated at an incredible CHF 450,000.00 by the standards of the time. A telegram to the State Council revealed that the total of 268 homeless people were distributed among the municipalities of Ferden (9), Kippel (201), Ried (17), Weissried (3) and Blatten (5). To mark this anniversary, the municipality of Wiler and the Wiler church council are organising an event to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the village fire in Wiler. On Friday from 19:00 and all day on Saturday. The proceeds will be donated to the Wiler church. Further information will follow. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
